Wellington Phoenix has made a significant signing by bringing back James McGarry, a championship-winning fullback, to enhance the club's chances of lifting its first major trophy. McGarry, who recently won the A-League championship with Central Coast Mariners in 2023, has signed on for the next two seasons in the Isuzu UTE A-League after leaving Brisbane Roar. The 28-year-old defender was instrumental for the Roar in the 2025-26 season, starting 24 matches and contributing a goal and three assists. His previous experience includes 38 appearances for Wellington Phoenix during the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons, making him a familiar face at the club.

Phoenix head coach Chris Greenacre expressed his excitement about McGarry's return, stating, "Jimmy’s a big signing for the club. He’s got a lot of experience and at 28 he’s in his prime and is ready to kick-on in his career." Greenacre highlighted McGarry's modern playing style, noting his ability to defend well while also contributing to the attack. McGarry's championship experience is seen as a vital asset for the Phoenix as they aim for success in the upcoming season.

Having grown up in Wellington, McGarry views this move as a return to his second home. He stated, "I moved to Wellington when I was 15... I want to bring that feeling to Wellington." The fullback is eager to contribute to the club's success and is enthusiastic about the plans Greenacre has for the team. He believes that the style of play proposed by the coach aligns perfectly with his strengths as a player.

McGarry is particularly looking forward to playing in front of the passionate Wellington fans, known as the Yellow Fever. He reminisced about his last game for the Phoenix in Wellington, where he played in front of a lively crowd. Now, he is excited to make regular appearances at home and hopes to create memorable moments for the fans and the club. With McGarry's return, Wellington Phoenix is poised to make a strong push for the title in the upcoming A-League season.
