The Wellington Phoenix Women have significantly bolstered their squad ahead of their historic first A-League Women's semi-final appearance, promoting promising 18-year-old youth player Mikaela Bangalan to the first team travelling squad. This pivotal call-up sees Bangalan join the senior ranks as the Phoenix prepare to face the Brisbane Roar in a crucial two-legged semi-final series, marking a rapid ascent for the young talent.

Head coach Bev Priestman expressed high praise for Mikaela Bangalan's immediate impact and adaptability within the team environment. Priestman noted, “Whenever Mickey has entered our environment, she’s really thrived. I think that’s a sign of a talented player, when they grow in the environment and rise to the occasion.” This promotion aligns with the Wellington Phoenix's overarching club philosophy, which leverages its women’s reserves and academy to cultivate and provide opportunities for emerging players.

Bangalan's journey to the first team has been swift since joining the Phoenix academy earlier this year. Her impressive performances have not only secured her a spot for the current semi-final run but have also positioned her as a valuable asset for the upcoming season. The young midfielder boasts a strong national pedigree, having represented New Zealand at under-16 level and being part of the national squad for the under-17 World Cup last year.

Mikaela Bangalan also shares a history with current Football Ferns and Wellington Phoenix midfielder Pia Vlok, with both players having previously competed for Auckland teams Fencibles United and Bucklands Beach. The Wellington Phoenix Women are entering the finals on the back of their most successful season to date, finishing second on the A-League Women’s regular season ladder. Their impressive campaign saw them score 38 goals and concede just 17, both league-high statistics.

The semi-final clash will see the Wellington Phoenix take on the Brisbane Roar, who secured their spot by dominating Adelaide United 3-0 in their elimination final last week. The Nix have a recent positive record against the Roar, having beaten them 3-0 in their last encounter on March 14, though an earlier season fixture resulted in a draw when playing away.

The first leg of the semi-final is scheduled for Sunday, May 3, kicking off at 7pm at Brisbane’s Spencer Park. The decisive return fixture will then take place a week later at Porirua Park, where the Wellington Phoenix will aim to secure their place in the Grand Final.
